Hans Uhlmann

Berlin 1900 - Berlin 1975

Hans Uhlmann was born on November 27, 1900, in Berlin. After studying engineering, Uhlmann turned to sculpture. He began sculpting geometrical bodies in 1925, and began using wire in the construction beginning in 1932.
Hans Uhlmann from arrested for passing out anti-fascist leaflets in 1933, which had the effect that his works were categorized as degenerate and removed from German museums. He remained in custody until 1935. Despite this turn of events, Hans Uhlmann created numerous metal sculptures before the war's end; these were then exhibited at the Rosen Gallery in Berlin after the end of the war.
Hans Uhlmann was made professor for sculpture at the College of Arts Berlin. In the following years, he produced geometric figures out of iron elements, whose constructivistic composition pulls the observer into the "movement" suggested by the piece.
Hans Uhlmann died on October 28, 1975, in Berlin.
